Victorian Policy

Crime and Community Safety

  • Reform bail laws to prioritise community safety, victims’ rights, and accountability for repeat offenders.
  • Review and reform bail, sentencing and repeat-offender laws using published crime, victimisation and reoffending evidence, with a focus on community safety.
  • Restore police powers while enforcing transparency and public trust in policing operations.
  • Support community-led safety initiatives, victim support services, and local crime prevention partnerships.
  • Support the United Firefighters Union of Australia (Victorian Branch) and the advocacy of its Secretary, Peter Marshall, for the protection of firefighters' safety, fair remuneration and working conditions. Defend existing enforceable minimum staffing levels, safe rostering arrangements, equipment and protective clothing standards, workplace classifications, and established consultation and dispute resolution protections within firefighters' enterprise agreements. Ensure genuine good-faith bargaining with firefighters and their representatives, together with adequate funding for modern firefighting appliances, operational resources and emergency response capability throughout Victoria.
  • Require transparent reporting on courts and parole outcomes, community safety and reoffending, while respecting judicial independence and legal safeguards.
  • Redeploy sworn police from routine administration to frontline work, rebuild the Police Reserve and facilitate recruitment of experienced officers and eligible Defence Force veterans.
  • Expand magistrates’ courts, judicial appointments, prosecution resources and Legal Aid capacity, including courts in growth areas.
  • Propose a 24-hour Bail Court, published bail decisions and supervised or monitored bail for serious charges, subject to procedural safeguards.
  • Review repeat-offender bail and sentencing rules, and make sentencing outcome data more accessible to the public.
  • Set a target for quicker hearings of serious violent charges while protecting fair-trial rights and court capacity.
  • Introduce a faster sentencing process for people pleading guilty to eligible minor offences.
  • Keep licensed firearms owners and lawful hunting activities subject to clear, proportionate regulation, with enforcement focused on unlawful firearms use.
  • Increase victim-support and rehabilitation pathways for young first-time drug offenders, alongside action against illicit drug supply.
