How We Select Candidates

The steps every Reform AU candidate goes through, from nomination to polling day.

Reform AU chooses its candidates through an open, written process so every member knows how it works. Under the party constitution (clause 10.1) the National Executive sets these procedures, subject to approval by the Registered Officer.

1

Nominations open

The National Executive announces on the Reform AU website that nominations are open. The notice may also be shared on the party’s social media pages and members’ group.

2

Nomination period

Nominations stay open for a period set by the National Executive, which can be no shorter than two weeks from the day the notice appears on the website.

3

Completing the application

Every applicant fills in the full nomination form attached to the notice. Only party members can nominate, and the form must be signed by a nominating member and a seconding member.

4

Nomination deposit

When applying, the applicant pays the party the nomination deposit set by the electoral commission. The party holds it until the selection process ends. If the applicant is endorsed, the party lodges the deposit with the commission for them. If they are not endorsed, the full amount is returned.

5

Interviews

The National Executive may ask any applicant, in writing (email counts), to attend an interview. An applicant who doesn’t make themselves available lets their application lapse.

6

Selection decision

The National Executive decides which applicants will represent Reform AU in either house of Parliament. It may decline any nomination at its absolute discretion.

7

Police check

An endorsed candidate provides a police check within two weeks of being told they are approved, and always before the party formally nominates them.

8

Campaigning

Formally nominated candidates are expected to campaign actively in their electorate. For the length of the campaign they may use the party’s logos and party-owned materials.

9

Election day

Candidates must work at least one polling place inside their own electorate on election day, and are encouraged to cover more than one where they can.

10

Media releases

Any media release a candidate wants to issue during the campaign must be approved by the party first. If approval is refused, the release must not go out.
